Turning Fleet Data Noise into Actionable Insights
Modern commercial vehicles are massive data producers in the transportation sector. With devices like ELDs, cameras, trailer sensors, reefer monitors, engine diagnostics, and OEM telematics, a single truck can generate tens of thousands of data points daily. For a fleet of hundreds or thousands, this amounts to an overwhelming volume of raw data that most organizations struggle to utilize effectively.
On the 'Loaded and Rolling' podcast, host Thomas Wasson spoke with EROAD's David Blackwell, ELD and Transport Product Manager, and Akshay Kumar, Senior Product Manager. They explored why fleets, despite having more data than ever, are finding it difficult to translate it into meaningful action and outlined a potential path forward.
Blackwell, who has over two decades of experience in telematics and product management with major North American carriers, identifies the core issue as a lack of tangible change.
"Despite having access to vast amounts of data, operational improvements on the ground are not materializing," Blackwell stated. "Fleets are inundated with hundreds of alerts, dozens of metrics, and KPIs. Data from trailers, cameras, and OEMs all appears critical, making it impossible to prioritize and act on anything effectively."
This paradox is precisely what EROAD aims to address. Blackwell explained that the most crucial question for back-office personnel – "What do I actually need to focus on?" – cannot be answered by raw data alone.
