Volvo Trucks Begins Serial Production of Redesigned VNR at Virginia Plant
Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) has announced the commencement of serial production for its redesigned VNR regional-haul tractor at the New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia. This marks a significant achievement in the company's extensive modernization of its on-highway truck lineup, occurring during a period of challenging market demand. The initial VNR units produced will be delivered to Clayton, a homebuilder based in Maryville, Tennessee, which constructed over 60,000 homes nationwide in 2024. Volvo has allocated $400 million for upgrades to the New River Valley facility, which now includes a new 350,000-square-foot building for cab welding and enhanced paint and material flow systems. The plant is now capable of manufacturing both the VNR and VNL models. Peter Voorhoeve, President of VTNA, stated, "Built on a completely new platform... the Volvo VNR is purpose-built for navigating congested city streets, distribution centers, and urban routes where visibility, precision, and agility are critical. We are excited to begin production and get these trucks into the hands of our customers." The diesel VNR was relaunched in March 2025 at the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting, boasting a 90% redesign from its predecessor. Orders for the updated tractor opened in September 2025. The VNR shares its basic body structure with VTNA's premium long-haul VNL model but features a different cab placement. Engine options are available.
