DP World's Southampton terminal has marked a significant achievement by successfully accommodating an ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) at berth 2/3 during its first-ever simultaneous ULCV berthing operation. Previously, ULCV arrivals at Southampton were exclusively handled at the SCT 5 berth. However, through a coordinated effort and a precisely executed maneuver by expert marine pilots, the port has now enabled ULCV berthing at SCT 2/3.

Steve Masters, Southampton Harbour Master, praised the team's proficiency and commitment, underscoring their contribution to the safe and efficient execution of the operation. Extensive training and simulation exercises were conducted to prepare pilots and tug crews for the complex maneuvering involved with CAT 7 Vessels, such as the MV Manilla Express.

With the SCT 5 berth occupied by another ULCV, the CMA CGM Louvre, Associated British Ports' (ABP) channel widening project within Southampton's Western Docks has opened up possibilities for ultra-large vessels to utilize other berths at DP World's container terminal. This development also streamlines the passage of large container ships alongside the port's largest cruise vessels.

Captains Noel Charlton and Chris Hoyle, who piloted the Manilla Express, highlighted the importance of this milestone in allowing the port to simultaneously handle two of the world's largest container ships. Their successful collaboration with the vessel's crew was crucial to this accomplishment.
