Port of Rotterdam and Swietelsky Rail Benelux Sign Contract for Maasvlakte-Zuid Railway Yard Track Construction
The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Swietelsky Rail Benelux B.V. have formalized an agreement for the construction of a crucial segment of the new Maasvlakte-Zuid railway yard. This initial phase involves building a bundle of six tracks, each designed to accommodate trains up to 740 meters in length. The project, developed in close collaboration with ProRail, is supported by a subsidy from the European Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Swietelsky is slated to commence construction in the spring of 2025, with the operational commissioning anticipated by mid-2027. The development of this railway yard is a strategic necessity to manage the escalating volume of rail freight moving from Maasvlakte towards the European hinterland, addressing a significant capacity bottleneck. To ensure the efficient and continuous flow of containers to the hinterland, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, ProRail, and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management are collectively investing in sustainable and efficient rail infrastructure. This initiative is a key component of the Port Authority's broader strategy to promote rail freight transport, recognizing its lower emissions of CO2, NOx, and particulate matter compared to road transport. These efforts align directly with the European Union's Green Deal objectives, which aim for a substantial reduction in transport emissions by 55% by 2030 and a remarkable 90% by 2050. The Maasvlakte-Zuid railway yard development is projected to contribute significantly to the Port of Rotterdam Authority's goal of reducing CO2 emissions from hinterland and continental transport by 30% by 2030, in line with the national Climate Agreement.
