Everllence and Vale Forge Partnership for Ethanol Marine Fuel
Everllence and Vale have entered into a cooperation agreement to advance the development of ethanol as a marine fuel. Vale, a global leader in iron ore, copper, and nickel production and Brazil's foremost logistics operator, will collaborate with Everllence on this initiative.
The partnership will focus on developing an advanced ethanol-powered engine, leveraging Everllence's proven B&W ME-LGI platform. This platform utilizes Liquid Gas Injection technology, aiming to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-fuel engines.
Ethanol presents significant advantages as a marine fuel. It boasts life-cycle carbon neutrality and substantially reduces emissions when compared to fossil fuels. Furthermore, it is sulfur-free, possesses very low toxicity, is biodegradable, and water-soluble. Its liquid state at ambient temperatures and pressures simplifies bunkering and onboard handling procedures, allowing for the use of standardized methods.
This agreement supports Vale's broader multifuel strategy, which seeks to enhance fleet flexibility and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Christian Ludwig, Vice President and Head of Global Sales at Everllence, highlighted Vale's recognized commitment to ethanol as an energy transition fuel. He anticipates Brazil and China will be crucial markets for this collaboration, stating, "This agreement represents a milestone for the decarbonization journey of large-scale shipping."
Everllence has previously showcased its ethanol capabilities, successfully operating a 90-bore two-stroke ME-LGIM engine on ethanol across all load points in 2025.
