200 Voices Across the US Rally for Cleaner Port Infrastructure Investments in Southern California
In August 2023, a coalition of 111 businesses and labor organizations penned a letter to the Mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach, urging them to oppose the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) proposed Port Indirect Source Rule. This proposed regulation was deemed so flawed that this diverse group quickly united to ask both Mayors to champion their ports, safeguard jobs and the local economy, and prevent a misguided regulation from hindering the transition to zero-emissions. For the past year, PMSA and its allies have diligently worked to inform policymakers and elected officials about the severe repercussions of implementing a Port Indirect Source Rule. A recent economic study by the California Center for Jobs & the Economy highlights that the ports are instrumental in generating nearly $20 billion in labor income and supporting over 3 million jobs. Despite the ports' ongoing success in reducing emissions without such a rule and the significant economic risks involved, SCAQMD staff persist in advocating for the adoption of an emissions cap and Port Indirect Source Rule. In response, the number of dissenting voices has amplified. On September 17, 2024, 200 organizations collectively called on the Mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach to publicly oppose the Port Indirect Source Rule and instead endorse a new strategy focused on investing in infrastructure to support cleaner equipment and port operations. This coalition is remarkably diverse, encompassing labor unions and businesses.
