Norfolk Southern crews are working across the network to repair widespread damage caused by Hurricane Helene, but rail service is still suspended on many lines stretching from Georgia to West Virginia. Crews are focused on clearing trees from a 70-mile section of the Brunswick District between Macon and Brunswick, Georgia. Additionally, unprecedented flooding has disrupted rail service east and west of Asheville, North Carolina, on the former Southern Railway, with no estimated timeline for the resumption of freight train operations through the city. In West Virginia and Virginia, power outages are impacting rail service between Bluefield, West Virginia, and Norton, Virginia. In the South, downed power lines have taken rail service offline between Augusta, Georgia, and Millen, Georgia, and extending up to Columbia, South Carolina.

The railroad reports significant progress in restoring service on key network routes, including the vital corridors between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Jacksonville, Florida, via Atlanta, and between Birmingham, Alabama, and Charlotte, North Carolina, also passing through Atlanta. Service has also been reinstated between Macon and Savannah, Georgia, within the Savannah District.

Norfolk Southern will continue to provide updates to customers as additional lines become operational. This story originally appeared on Trains.com.
