Matson Enhances Intermodal Cargo Security Program Amidst Rising Theft Concerns
In response to an increase in cargo theft within the intermodal sector, Matson, Inc. has unveiled a new cargo security program. This initiative, developed in collaboration with BNSF Railway and War-Lok, is set to launch in the second quarter of 2026. It will introduce an additional two layers of security for the majority of Matson's international intermodal cargo at no extra charge to its customers.
**Dual-Layer Protection Strategy**
The program specifically targets containers traveling from Los Angeles to major inland hubs such as Chicago, Memphis, and Dallas.
* **War-Lok Security Devices:** Matson will equip every international container moving from Los Angeles to BNSF network destinations with these specialized locking devices.
* **Lower-Well Positioning:** Through a unique arrangement with BNSF Railway, Matson containers will be placed in the lower well of international intermodal rail cars. This strategic positioning renders the container doors virtually inaccessible while the train is in transit.
**Geographic Reach**
The enhanced security measures will encompass:
* Shipments originating from Los Angeles destined for all BNSF network locations.
* Cargo transiting through the Chicago gateway to select destinations in the Eastern United States, up to the BNSF interchange point.
**Leveraging Expedited Services**
This new security program complements Matson's existing expedited Transpacific services, including the China-Long Beach Express (CLX) and Matson Asia Express (MAX). By integrating industry-leading ocean transit times with robust inland security, Matson intends to establish a new benchmark for cargo protection.
