Following a recent addition of 120 paved acres to support its burgeoning roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vehicle business, the Port of Brunswick, Georgia, is set to expand its capacity further by an additional 50 acres. The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Board approved this measure to increase vehicle storage at Brunswick, enabling the authority to more efficiently handle the growing trade at Colonel's Island Terminal.

'The combination of space to grow, global and domestic reach, and quality of service make the Port of Brunswick the nation’s premier gateway for ro/ro trade,' stated Griff Lynch, Georgia Ports Authority president and chief executive. 'With the significant infrastructure investments we’re making at the nation’s largest auto port, GPA is prepared to handle future growth from new and existing customers. This move comes in response to requests from auto manufacturers seeking to expand their cargo volumes through Georgia.'

Georgia is home to production facilities for Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and numerous automotive component manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz also operates an auto processing terminal at Brunswick.

The expanded auto processing capacity, approved at the GPA's meeting on September 24, is scheduled to become operational in the summer of 2025. This follows the recent acquisition of over 120 similar acres as part of a $262 million investment in auto storage and warehousing enhancements at Colonel's Island.
