Alabama Port Authority Kicks Off Final Stage of Mobile Harbor Modernization
The Alabama Port Authority has officially launched the concluding phase of its Mobile Harbor Modernization Project. This ambitious six-phase initiative, which commenced in May 2021, is projected to wrap up in the first half of next year.
"Upon completion, this project will offer a significant benefit to shippers, generating increased opportunities for economic development not only in Mobile but throughout our state and region. In addition to the economic advantages, the Port is proud to have dedicated 100% of the usable material dredged from the channel to support environmentally beneficial projects across the Mobile Bay area. These initiatives serve as excellent examples of what can be achieved through collaboration," stated John Driscoll, Director & CEO of the Alabama Port Authority.
The sixth phase focuses on utilizing the dredged material for environmental restoration initiatives at Dauphin Island Causeway, Deer River, and Relic Shell. These specific projects were identified during the research and design phase of the Mobile Harbor Deepening and Widening Project, officially known as the General Reevaluation Report (GRR).
This comprehensive process, undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, lasted for three and a half years, from November 2015 to May 2019.
The modernization efforts will position the Port of Mobile as the deepest port in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, it will feature a three-mile passing lane designed for post-Panamax vessels, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
