Port of Lázaro Cárdenas Begins 2026 with Strong Cargo Growth
The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas has experienced a positive start to 2026, with January throughput reaching 2,383,826 tonnes. This represents a significant 6% increase compared to the same month in 2025. This impressive result is attributed to the port's operational efficiency, effective coordination across the entire logistics chain, and the sustained confidence of its users.
Containerized cargo continues to be the dominant segment, making up 56% of the total throughput. Mineral cargo followed closely at 25%, with the remaining 19% comprised of general cargo, agricultural products, liquids, and vehicles.
Container volumes showed particularly robust growth, with 234,962 TEUs handled in January, marking an substantial 22% year-on-year increase. The distribution of container traffic by trade type was relatively balanced: imports accounted for 25%, exports for 26%, and transshipment for a significant 49%. This high transshipment share highlights the port's expanding role as a key regional hub in international maritime trade.
In terms of inland transportation, road haulage remains the primary mode, accounting for 73% of cargo movement, while rail handled the remaining 27%, demonstrating effective intermodal connectivity.
Vessel calls also saw an increase during the month, with 150 ships attended, an 11% rise compared to January 2025.
