DP World has announced a GB£1 billion (US$1.3 billion) expansion of London Gateway, with the ambitious goal of transforming it into Britain's largest container port within the next five years. The global port and terminal operator will significantly increase the port's capacity by constructing two new shipping berths, bringing the total to six. These berths will be capable of accommodating the world's largest container vessels. To manage the anticipated surge in containerized trade, the site will also feature a second rail terminal. DP World projects that by the end of this decade, the entire 2.5km-long quayside will be able to simultaneously berth six vessels exceeding 400 meters in length, and will be equipped with Europe's tallest quay cranes. This expansion is poised to generate an additional 400 permanent jobs, augmenting the current workforce of 1,200 at the site. The project represents the culmination of a rapid growth strategy for the Thames Estuary hub, which commenced operations in 2013 and has since served as a catalyst for economic regeneration in south Essex. The cumulative investment by DP World at London Gateway will surpass GB£3 billion (approximately US$4 billion), transforming the former oil refinery site into one of the UK's most significant logistics hubs, currently handling around 2 million TEUs annually.
