Peruvian COSCO Terminal Begins Operations
Chancay Port, situated on Peru's central coast about 78 kilometers north of Lima, represents COSCO SHIPPING's inaugural green and smart port investment in South America. The port was officially inaugurated in Peru on November 14th, with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte attending via video conference. This natural deep-water port boasts a strategic geographical position and excellent logistics connections. It spans 1,500 meters and features four berths—two for container handling and two multi-purpose—designed to accommodate the world's largest container vessels. With an annual throughput capacity of 1 million TEUs, 6 million tons of bulk cargo, and 160,000 vehicles, the facility includes storage yards, warehouses, and flexible logistics zones. A 1.8-kilometer tunnel provides a direct link to the Pan-American Highway. Chancay Port is equipped with advanced intelligent loading and unloading systems, including fully electric container trucks that reduce energy consumption by over 25%. Following successful trial runs, plans are underway to establish a regional logistics distribution hub at the COSCO SHIPPING Chancay Peru Terminal. Two direct shipping routes between Shanghai and Chancay are expected to cut cargo transit times from Peru to China to just 23 days. Furthermore, a new roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) service is anticipated to create a significant automotive distribution center in South America. Phase I of the project is now operational.
