New Container Quay to Be Built at Port of Valencia
Dutch dredging and marine construction contractor Jan De Nul Group announced on Thursday that it has signed a contract with the Valencia port authority for a new container quay in the port's northern extension. The maritime contractor will carry out the works in a joint venture with Acciona Construcción and Grupo Bertolín. The new quay will span 137 hectares and feature a quay wall exceeding 1,900 meters. The project is expected to take 58 months, just under five years, to complete. This expansion will enable the Port of Valencia to handle an additional five million containers annually, increasing its total capacity to twelve million containers per year from its current seven million. The new quay will be equipped to serve the latest generation of MEGAMAX vessels, capable of carrying up to 430 meters in length and over 24,000 containers. The port authority intends to reuse as much of the 25 million cubic meters of dredged material as possible for the quay's construction, minimizing the need for imported soil.
