Indian Register of Shipping Launches First Defence Export Project
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has marked a significant expansion into international defence work with the launch of its first defence export project: a floating dry dock for the Sri Lanka Navy. The construction of this crucial facility is being undertaken by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). The launch ceremony was held on February 19, 2026, at GSL, with Rear Admiral MDK Wijewardana of the Sri Lanka Navy gracing the occasion as the chief guest.
This floating dry dock is poised to significantly bolster the Sri Lanka Navy's in-country ship repair and maintenance capabilities. It will provide essential support for the underwater repair and maintenance of a wide array of naval vessels, ultimately enhancing operational readiness and fostering self-reliance within the Sri Lankan maritime forces.
IRS played a pivotal role in the project by providing comprehensive classification services and technical oversight, ensuring adherence to IRS Rules and international standards. Commander KK Dhawan, Head of Defence at IRS, hailed the launch as a historic milestone, stating, "It reflects the trust placed in Indian shipbuilding and classification capabilities." He further emphasized that the project underscores a commitment to supporting friendly foreign navies with robust technical standards.
The successful completion of this project highlights India's increasing prominence as a maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region. It aligns with national objectives to promote indigenous shipbuilding, boost defence exports, and solidify India's standing as a global maritime hub.
The collaborative effort between IRS, Goa Shipyard Limited, and the Sri Lanka Navy has culminated in this successful launch, demonstrating a strong partnership in advancing maritime defence capabilities.
