Digital Freight Broker Furloughs Staff Amidst Customer Losses and Funding Scramble
Digital freight broker Next Trucking and its sister trucking company, Next Freight Solutions, are reportedly on the verge of shutting down. Most of their remaining employees and drivers in Long Beach, California, have been furloughed, and the companies have effectively ceased operations. Executives are urgently seeking last-minute funding to prevent closure, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation. On September 19th, approximately 18 of Next Trucking's 28 remaining employees were informed of their furlough effective the following day, until further notice. The company cited 'the current level of work available' as the reason. A letter to affected employees, obtained by FreightWaves, stated, 'We are hopeful that we will be able to restore you to your prior position with our company. However, it is important to note that we reserve the right to change this date based on our business needs.' The letter did not specify a return date for the furloughed workers. While Next executives attributed the furloughs to the economic slowdown impacting the freight industry, some current and former employees dispute this, claiming greed led to the loss of two major customers, Amazon and Tesla, in recent months. These employees allege that Next had failed to forward payments to carriers for months for loads handled on behalf of these accounts.
