Maersk has officially named the first vessel in a new class of 17,480 TEU dual-fuel container ships, the Berlin Maersk, at a ceremony held on 18 June at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
This marks the 14th dual-fuel vessel to enter Maersk’s fleet and introduces a new series of six sister ships set to be delivered by HHI throughout 2025.
The Berlin Maersk will begin operations on 7 July, joining Maersk’s AE3 service connecting Eastern Asia and Northern Europe with its first port call in Shanghai.
Designed similarly to the earlier Ane Maersk class, the Berlin Maersk features a wider beam to accommodate additional container capacity, making it the largest dual-fuel vessel in the Maersk fleet to date.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, emphasized that this new vessel class is a key component in Maersk’s broader fleet renewal strategy aimed at maintaining competitive advantage and supporting the company’s decarbonisation goals.
Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, highlighted the significance of the Berlin Maersk class as an evolution in Maersk’s sustainability journey.
All vessels in the series will sail under the Danish flag and reflect Maersk’s continued investment in future-ready, environmentally advanced shipping solutions.
