Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) has ordered 20 hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers to boost efficiency and cut emissions. The order was booked in Q4 2025. Delivery is set for Q4 2026.
PNCT is one of the largest container terminals on the US East Coast. Its entire straddle carrier fleet comes from Konecranes Noell, with more than 200 units ordered over the years. After introducing its first hybrid models in 2022, the terminal is now expanding its hybrid fleet for the second time. It ordered 15 hybrid units in Q4 2024.
The new carriers use Konecranes’ hybrid-drive technology. Each unit combines a diesel genset with a rechargeable battery. The setup reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions, while maintaining full operational performance. PNCT will deploy the machines for ship-to-shore operations, stacking, and truck and rail handling.
“PNCT has relied on Konecranes Noell straddle carriers for decades,” said Charlie Ferlisi, Director of Engineering & Equipment Services at PNCT. “We have already seen the benefits of the hybrid drives. This investment will further reduce fuel use and improve overall efficiency.”
Konecranes supports PNCT through a nearby service hub with a fully equipped spare parts warehouse. The terminal also operates Konecranes RTGs and reach stackers.
“This is a strong repeat order from a customer that knows our technology well,” said Peter Kania, Sales Director, Port Solutions at Konecranes. “It confirms the performance of our hybrid straddle carriers in demanding terminal operations.”
The contract forms part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, which supports the step-by-step decarbonisation of port equipment, from hybrid solutions to fully electric and future zero-emission technologies.
