ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for a next-generation floating offshore substation designed for deepwater wind farms.
The concept received a SMART (SHM) Tier 3 AIP under the ABS Guide for Smart Functions for Marine Vessels and Offshore Units. The approval confirms that the proposed structural health management system meets Tier 3 requirements.
The system combines high-fidelity measurements with predictive modeling. It aims to improve real-time monitoring and strengthen long-term structural integrity management of the asset.
Floating substations play a critical role in offshore wind projects. They collect power from turbines, convert it, and export electricity to onshore grids.
“Floating substations are vital for deepwater wind energy,” said Robert Langford, ABS Vice President, Global Offshore Renewables. “ABS is proud to support this sector with global standards for offshore wind foundations, substations, and supporting vessels.”
HD HHI highlighted the role of smart technologies in the energy transition.
“Our Smart SHM technology will support safety and efficiency in offshore wind,” said Byungki Choi, Executive Vice President at HD HHI’s Hyundai Maritime Research Institute. “We value ABS’s technical expertise and close cooperation throughout the certification process.”
HD HHI plans to continue working with ABS as the project moves toward construction and operation.
