Iran Attacks Refineries; CMA CGM Halts All Cargo Bookings to the Middle East
CMA CGM, a major global container shipping line, has suspended all cargo bookings to the Middle East, effective immediately. This decision comes as Iranian attacks have disrupted shipping in the Persian Gulf. Reports indicate that several oil and gas tankers have been damaged in the region. The Athena Nova, a bitumen tanker flagged in Honduras and operated from the UAE, was reportedly hit by two drones while attempting to cross the strait and is said to be sinking. The U.S.-registered tanker Stena Imperative also sustained damage in an attack at the port of Bahrain. While no crew members were injured, one shipyard worker was killed and two others were injured. The Stena Imperative is part of the Maritime Administration’s Tanker Security Program, designed to support international trade and U.S. armed forces.
In an advisory, CMA CGM stated, "In view of the on-going developments in the region, CMA CGM has decided to suspend all bookings with immediate effect, and until further notice for ports of loading/ports of discharge located in the following countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (all ports except Fujairah and Khor Fakkan), Saudi Arabia (all ports except Jeddah, King Abdallah Port, Yanbu, NEOM), and Iraq (port of Umm Qasr)."
