LAS VEGAS – While Trimble's integration of its telematics business with Platform Science may have been the highlight of Insight, the massive conference for Trimble customers, the remaining parts of Trimble's transportation segment are also receiving significant upgrades. Telematics is moving to Platform Science, with Trimble's ELD business (NASDAQ: TRMB) at the core of the combined transfer/equity stake transaction. However, at the Insight conference earlier this month, the announcement of the Platform Science deal was accompanied by a series of technology enhancements in other areas of Trimble's transportation sector. Michael Kornhauser, vice president of transportation and logistics, stated that these enhancements are all driven by a common theme: connectivity.

Trimble's Transportation Group will retain its transportation management system offerings, which are part of its enterprise group. The segment also includes a maps division and Transporeum, a recently acquired German company whose transportation management solutions are being expanded into North America. Additionally, it encompasses Vusion, a tool for ensuring compliance with fuel taxes and other regulations.

"The most significant feedback we're receiving from our customers is their desire for connected technology," Kornhauser told FreightWaves at Insight. "And by 'connected,' I truly mean integrated."

'Swivel Chair Integration'
Kornhauser elaborated on what this integration entails.
