The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) began operations at the second berth of the Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT). Two vessels, the ultra-large MSC CHINA and feeder vessel MSC MANASA F, docked simultaneously, showcasing the terminal’s enhanced capacity. The new berth allows SLPA to handle large vessels concurrently, strengthening Colombo’s position as a key regional hub.
The ceremony, held with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), highlighted the strong partnership between SLPA and its largest volume contributor.
Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Hon. Anura Karunathilaka, said the milestone reflects national progress and institutional commitment. He added that partial operations will begin this year, with full readiness expected in 2026, boosting the economy.
SLPA Chairman Admiral Sirimewan Ranasinghe (Rtd) stated the second berth improves operational efficiency and credibility. “It increases handling capacity and strengthens Colombo’s position among leading regional ports,” he said.
MSC’s Shamal Perera, Director – Operations and Regional Operations Manager, reaffirmed the partnership. “We anticipate more vessels and higher cargo volumes. Cooperation with SLPA continues to deliver strong results,” he said.
CECT construction now features 900 metres of quay completed, with the remaining 300 metres 80% finished. Depth ranges from 18 to 20 metres. Automated rail-mounted gantry crane lanes one to ten have been tested; lanes eleven to twenty are on schedule. Full operational readiness is planned for late 2026.
In the first nine months of 2025, SLPA handled 2.1 million TEUs, a 2.7% increase year-on-year, with MSC as the top contributor alongside other global lines.
The event included senior SLPA and MSC officials, including SLPA Vice Chairman Eng. Herath M. P. Jayawardhana, Managing Director Eng. Ganaka Hemachandra, Harbour Master Capt. Nirmal Silva, and MSC Managing Director Uminda Dunuwille.
