Shanghai, the world’s busiest container port, has marked a historic milestone, exceeding 50m teu throughput for the first time.
Shanghai has been the world’s top container port for the last 14 years, beating Singapore into second place. The port started container operations four decades ago, in 1978, recording a throughput of 7,951 teu. The port’s box volume stood at 49.16m teu last year.
Analysts at Alphaliner predicted in August that Shanghai would breach the 50m teu mark this year after growing 7.5% in the first half of the year. This growth has only intensified over the remainder of the year, fuelled by US import demand.
The port has nearly 350 international routes, covering more than 700 ports in over 200 countries and regions. It works with 22 ports in the Chinese provinces and cities along the Yangtze River, including 16 ports in the Yangtze River Delta.
