Samskip has announced its participation in the HyEkoTank project, supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

The project will see Samskip’s multipurpose vessel, Samskip Kvitnos, retrofitted with advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by TECO 2030.

“We have spent years actively pursuing sustainable solutions across our fleet, and this retrofit of the Samskip Kvitnos aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of shipping. Working alongside TECO 2030 and the HyEkoTank consortium, we are ensuring that the Kvitnos not only meets but stays ahead of the zero-emission targets set by the EU and Norwegian authorities, all while continuing to provide reliable service for our customers,” stated Erik Hofmeester, head of Vessel Management at Samskip.

This retrofit will help the vessel stay ahead of upcoming regulations, such as the FuelEU Maritime and EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and ensure compliance with the zero-emission requirements for Norwegian world heritage fjords by 2030.

Operating along a crucial route from Rotterdam to Hammerfest, Samskip Kvitnos plays a key role in Samskip’s sustainable logistics efforts in environmentally sensitive regions.

Moreover, the HyEkoTank project is the largest fuel cell retrofit initiative globally and highlights the potential of hydrogen technology in reducing maritime emissions.

The retrofit is expected to be completed by 2025, ensuring Samskip’s fleet remains efficient and environmentally responsible.

The project is supported by partners like Shell, Umoe Advanced Composites, and the Arctic University of Norway, aiming to enable zero-emission navigation in European coastal areas and Norwegian fjords.
