Port of New Orleans Secures Over $1 Million Grant for Security and Emergency Response Upgrades
The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) has been awarded a substantial grant of $1,040,583 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Port Security Grant Program. This funding will be instrumental in implementing significant physical and technological improvements designed to enhance the surveillance capabilities of the Harbor Police Department (HPD) and equip them with vital resources for emergency response. All planned upgrades are slated for completion by August 31, 2027. In 2024 alone, FEMA's Port Security Grant Program allocated $90 million nationwide to various entities for the crucial task of strengthening port infrastructures against potential threats such as terrorism, natural disasters, and other critical emergencies. Ronald Wendel, Jr., who serves as the Acting President and CEO of Port NOLA and Acting CEO of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB), conveyed his sincere appreciation to FEMA for their ongoing support, emphasizing that this grant represents a critical advancement in bolstering security measures. This follows a significant investment last year, when Port NOLA received $947,280 to upgrade its Emergency Operations Center (EOC), a key facility for coordinating responses during major crises like hurricanes. Over the past three years, Port NOLA has cumulatively received $2,502,827 in FEMA funding, dedicated to enhancing its overall security and emergency preparedness.
