Port of Long Beach Releases Final Study on Tesoro Calciner Facility Demolition
The Port of Long Beach has published its final study assessing Tesoro Refining and Marketing Co. LLC's plan to demolish the Tesoro Calciner facility situated at 2450 Pier B St. in Long Beach. The Port of Long Beach stated that no new development, operations, or land uses are currently proposed for the site after the facility's demolition. The study, titled 'An Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND),' is accessible at www.polb.com/ceqa. A draft version was issued on June 7th for a 30-day public comment period, which concluded that with the implementation of mitigation measures, environmental impacts would be less than significant. No substantial new environmental effects were identified, and the comments received during the review did not necessitate the recirculation of the Draft IS/MND. Furthermore, the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners will review the Final IS/MND, incorporating public feedback from the review process, during their regular meeting on September 9th. The meeting will be live-streamed at www.polb.com and can also be attended in person at the Bob Foster Civic Chambers, located at 411 W. Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach. The Calciner facility was initially constructed in 1982 by Martin-Marietta Corp. as a partnership with Champlin Petroleum Co. Tesoro took over operations of the facility in 2013 and ceased its activities in June 2022. Prior to ending its lease agreement with the Californian port, Tesoro is obligated to remove all improvements and property from the premises and restore the site.
