Brazilian state-owned giant Petrobras has signed contracts worth R$16.5bn ($2.75bn) for the construction and chartering of 12 platform supply vessels (PSVs).
The contracts, which include a period of up to four years for mobilization and 12 years of operation, were signed with Bram Offshore and Starnav Serviços Marítimos.
The vessels will be built by the two companies in their shipyards. Bram will build the vessels in a shipyard in Navegantes while Starnav will build the vessels in Itajaí. During the construction phase, the contracts have a requirement of 40% local content. Each company will be responsible for chartering six vessels.
According to Petrobras, these vessels will be essential for the company’s exploration and production operations until 2028. Of the total value of the contracts, R$5.2bn ($867m) is earmarked for investments in shipbuilding in Brazil.
The vessels will have a hybrid propulsion system, which combines electric motors and batteries with diesel/biodiesel generators, in line with Petrobras’ commitment to reducing GHG emissions.

These are projects that meet the highest environmental, social and governance standards, essential for a sustainable future, in addition to generating around 11,000 direct and indirect jobs,” said Magda Chambriard, Petrobras CEO.
