New ZMPC Cranes Enhance Port of Gioia Tauro's Container Handling Capacity
The Port of Gioia Tauro has received four new ship-to-shore cranes, with an additional two anticipated by the end of this month. These state-of-the-art cranes are manufactured by the Chinese port equipment specialist, ZMPC. This expansion comes as the port experienced a significant 10.4% surge in container traffic during the first nine months of 2024. Building on previous upgrades, which included six new ship-to-shore cranes in November 2019 and three more in February 2023, the port will now boast a total of 25 quay cranes and three mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) by November. Each of these new cranes possesses a lifting capacity of 65 tons under spreader, enabling them to efficiently service ultra-large container vessels with capacities up to 25,000 TEUs. Andrea Agostinelli, President of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, expressed confidence that with these new additions, the terminal is robustly positioned to address future operational demands. The Port System Authority also reported that Gioia Tauro handled 2,929,950 TEUs in the first nine months of the year, marking a substantial 10.4% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
