Most Florida Ports Shuttered by Hurricane Milton; Earliest Reopening Friday
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday evening, hours after ports along its projected path were shut down. Despite being downgraded from a Category 5, an 8:30 p.m. EDT advisory on Oct. 9 from the National Hurricane Center warned Floridians of "life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, and flash flooding occurring over the Central Florida peninsula." Even before officially making landfall, the hurricane generated numerous tornadoes across the state throughout Wednesday, according to various news outlets. "The center of Milton will continue to move across the central part of the Florida peninsula overnight, and emerge off the east coast of Florida on Thursday," the National Hurricane Center stated in an Oct. 9 update. After moving into the Atlantic Ocean, Milton is anticipated to weaken gradually, the NHC added. Some Florida ports may reopen as early as Friday, Oct. 11. The Jacksonville Port Authority announced in an Oct. 9 update that it would remain closed on Oct. 10 but planned to reopen its main gates on Friday, contingent upon successful facility assessments. Ports on Florida's west coast, directly in Hurricane Milton's anticipated path, have not issued updates since Tuesday.
