Israel Strikes Hodeidah Port in Yemen, Escalating Regional Tensions
Israel announced on Sunday that it had bombed Houthi targets in Yemen, marking an expansion of its conflict with Iran's regional allies. This development comes just two days after the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an escalating conflict in Lebanon. Israel stated that the airstrikes on Yemen's Hodeidah port were a direct response to recent Houthi missile attacks targeting Israel. The situation is fueling fears of a wider regional conflict that could potentially involve Iran and the United States, Israel's primary ally. The Houthi-run health ministry reported that at least four people were killed and 29 others wounded in the strikes. These attacks occurred as Israel continued its offensive in Lebanon, where intensified bombardments over the past two weeks have resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Hezbollah leaders and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Israel reiterated its commitment to continuing its assault, with military chief of staff Herzi Halevi stating, "It has lost its head, and we need to keep hitting Hezbollah hard." Lebanon's Health Ministry reported that Israeli strikes on Sunday killed 32 people in Ain Deleb in the south and 21 in Baalbek-Hermel in the east. Additionally, 14 medics were killed in airstrikes over the preceding two days. Israeli drones were observed over Beirut throughout the night and much of Sunday, accompanied by the sounds of new airstrikes echoing across the Lebanese capital. Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border exchanges of fire since the commencement of the war in Gaza, which was initiated by the October 7th attack by Hamas militants. Yemen's Houthis have also launched sporadic attacks.
