Furetank transitions to complete fossil-free maritime operations

Swedish shipping company Furetank has obtained large-volume biogas access, allowing its European Union fleet to operate exclusively on renewable energy sources.

Through a mass-balanced biomethane supply arrangement, the company has achieved immediate conversion to sustainable operations an objective pursued for over ten years.

The new FuelEU Maritime regulation enables certified biogas injection at one European gas grid location and extraction at another, functioning similarly to green electricity systems.

This regulatory framework provides Furetank with adequate volumes to power all company-owned vessels operating in European waters using biomethane throughout 2025. The majority of the fleet currently utilizes renewable fuel sources.

During the September 1st Donsö Shipping Meet, the vessel Fure Valö demonstrated completely fossil-fuel-free operations.

Beyond biomethane as primary fuel, the vessel employed renewable biodiesel HVO100, obtained from Gothenburg Port, for engine combustion ignition a process traditionally dependent on marine gasoil.

Viktoria Höglund, Sustainability Strategist at Furetank, stated that complete fossil-free operations has remained the main target since converting the initial vessel to gas propulsion in 2015.

From Gothenburg Port’s perspective, Furetank’s achievement represents a significant milestone and demonstrates valuable industry leadership for broader shipping sector adoption.

Therese Jällbrink, Head of Renewable Energy at Gothenburg Port AB, explained that new regulations such as FuelEU Maritime are already catalyzing change, with shipping companies making early alternative fuel investments now benefiting from their experience and strategic partnerships.

Gothenburg Port has established a green corridor partnership with Rotterdam, targeting completely fossil-free maritime transport between these facilities.

This collaboration featuring Furetank as a central participant unites value chain stakeholders to advance solutions, address cost differentials between fossil and renewable fuels, and emphasize requirements for incentives and standardized regulations.
