Flex Box Shipping, the Chinese-controlled, Singapore-based owner and commercial manager, has firmed up a previously announced containership order at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
Alphaliner is reporting Flex Box has gone for four conventionally powered 8,800 teu newbuilds. Deliveries are pencilled in to begin in September 2027, with one vessel scheduled for handover each quarter through to the third quarter of 2028.
Flex Box has built a niche position in the container segment while also maintaining exposure to the capesize bulker market. The company operates as an umbrella for several smaller Chinese owners, including Maoming Gangxin Shipping, Seacon Qingdao and Fujian Zhonghang Shipping, and currently controls a fleet of 15 vessels, 13 of which are containerships. Its container fleet is split between internationally trading tonnage — typically sourced on the secondhand market — and vessels purpose-built for China’s domestic trades.
