Evergreen Vessel Achieves Record Draft in Zeebrugge
Evergreen's container ship, the Ever Greet, made a historic docking at the port of Zeebrugge in West Flanders, Belgium, on July 17th. The massive vessel, measuring 399.98 meters in length and 58.80 meters in width, entered the port with a draft of 16.3 meters, surpassing the previous record by 10 centimeters. The Ever Greet arrived from Sri Lanka carrying 17,989 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Increased draft allows ships to carry a greater volume of cargo. In Zeebrugge, 400 TEUs were unloaded, which was sufficient to reduce the ship's draft to 16 meters, enabling its onward journey to the Deurganckdok in Antwerp. Coastal pilots from the Agency Maritime Services and Coast (MDK) expertly guided the Ever Greet after it reported to the Wandelaar, a floating pilot station in the North Sea. Nathalie Balcaen of the Agency Maritime Services and Coast (MDK) commented, "Successfully guiding an ocean giant with that draft into Zeebrugge requires excellent teamwork. Our coastal pilots and colleagues from Maritime Guidance did a great job. I also want to thank the Technical Committee Zeebrugge, who helped prepare the entire scenario and monitored the entry from the radar tower in Zeebrugge." This development follows Antwerp's recent increase in its maximum permissible draft to 16 meters. Earlier this year, the MSC Aurora was the first ship to enter the Port of Antwerp with a 16-meter draft under the regular admission policy, following a successful transit on the Western Scheldt. This achievement represents a significant milestone for Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the culmination of three years of preparation.
