Echandia, the Swedish leader in maritime battery systems, will supply energy storage for eight new Spliethoff cargo vessels, with an option for two more.

The ships are under construction at Wuhu Shipyard in China, with WE Tech Solutions as system integrator. Echandia’s LTO batteries will optimize generator efficiency during short, intense cargo loading and unloading operations.

The LTO systems handle high-power bursts without degradation, maintaining performance in a compact footprint. They are designed for up to 20 years of service, surpassing competing solutions.

Each vessel will have a dedicated battery system for cargo operations. The batteries will stabilize engine load, improve fuel efficiency, reduce mechanical wear, and lower shore-power requirements.

“This project shows how batteries can boost efficiency in heavy-duty maritime operations,” said Torbjörn Bäck, CEO of Echandia. “Together with Spliethoff, WE Tech, and Wuhu Shipyard, we’re enabling smarter, more energy-efficient cargo handling.”

The vessels will primarily serve the Finland–USA route, carrying paper and other cargo. First battery deliveries are planned for April 2027, with commissioning by late 2027 or early 2028.
