Shipping Companies Halt India-Middle East Cargo Bookings Due to Persian Gulf Port Disruptions
Shipping carriers have temporarily suspended bookings for cargo traveling between India and the Middle East. This decision comes in response to the ongoing chaos and disruptions at ports in the Persian Gulf. While refrigerated cargo, due to its time-sensitive nature, is particularly affected, many major shipping lines have ceased all shipments to the Middle East until further notice. This situation is unfolding amidst escalating tensions, with shipping experts noting that the industry is awaiting the Houthi group's reaction to recent US/Israeli attacks on Iran. The broader Middle East conflict is expected to significantly impact global trade routes, with approximately 10% of the global container shipping fleet currently stranded or delayed within or outside the Persian Gulf. This instability is also raising concerns about US economic growth, as highlighted by Treasury Secretary Yellen.
