APM Terminals Secures 15-Year Extension for Jordan's Aqaba Container Terminal
Maersk-owned port operator APM Terminals has been granted an extension of its concession for Jordan's Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) for an additional 15 years, pushing the agreement's expiry to 2046. The official signing ceremony is slated to take place in Jordan at a later date, as confirmed by APM Terminals.
"This renewal signifies the next phase of our ambitious plans to enhance the Aqaba terminal," stated APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen. "The extension of our partnership underscores our successful public-private collaboration in Jordan and will enable us to further expand and develop our relationship. We will explore opportunities to establish a green corridor connecting Jordan's supply chains, while simultaneously prioritizing job creation and employee upskilling for the benefit of the Kingdom, a core value for APM Terminals."
The extended partnership involves an investment of approximately US$242 million. APM Terminals aims to significantly reduce emissions and achieve net-zero operations by 2040.
The Aqaba Container Terminal has consistently demonstrated high productivity. In 2023, the terminal achieved a record throughput of around 900,000 TEUs, representing a 5.4% increase from the previous year.
"It is truly remarkable to witness the dedication and performance of our employees in Aqaba," Svendsen added. "I am delighted that we are committing further to the future, aiming to elevate connectivity standards in Jordan and beyond, all while embracing sustainable and forward-thinking practices."
