Lloyd’s Register (LR) will provide Naval Classification services for the first three Hunter class frigates for the Royal Australian Navy. The contract comes from BAE Systems Maritime Australia (BAESMA).

The Hunter class ships are based on the UK Type 26 design. They are being built at Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia. LR will ensure the design and construction meet its Naval Ship Classification rules.

The contract covers work until the third ship enters service. LR will verify that all vessels comply with international standards for quality, safety, and reliability. This supports the protection of Royal Australian Navy personnel.

LR has worked on the program since 2020, providing on-site expertise. The new contract continues a five-year partnership with BAESMA.

Andy Coxall, BAESMA Delivery Director, said: “Partnering with LR ensures the Royal Australian Navy receives advanced, safe, and reliable vessels.”

Steve McDowall, LR Director of Naval Business Australasia, said: “We are proud to continue our collaboration and deliver classification services for these key ships.”

David Lloyd, LR Vice President Naval and Government Business, added: “The Hunter Class Program is central to Australia’s naval shipbuilding. We are honoured to support these highly capable vessels.”
