Port of Auckland announces it has reached the final development stages of an innovative in-port biofouling solution for cleaning specialized ship areas.
This new technology will provide shipping lines and cruise operators with additional confidence needed to operate in New Zealand waters while maintaining biosecurity standards and preserving New Zealand’s exceptional marine environment.
Chris Mills – GM Marine, Multi-Cargo and Cruise, stated that this new service will effectively manage biofouling and is designed to meet biofouling requirements.
The innovative spot cleaning approach represents a collaboration between Port of Auckland and New Zealand Diving and Salvage Limited, assisting ships when spot or niche area cleaning is required by New Zealand regulators.
Historically, vessels experiencing problems with specific areas required offshore cleaning, often in rough, dangerous conditions.
The new solution enables ships to arrive in Auckland and receive safe spot cleaning while maintaining usual passenger or freight operations.
The technology is new, and Port of Auckland and NZDS are maintaining confidentiality regarding operational details while seeking IP protections, developing the final commercial solution, and obtaining approval as a biosecurity treatment.
Once approved, the prototype can be utilized for spot cleaning this summer season, before the cruise season fully commences.
Meanwhile, Port of Auckland and NZDS will continue collaborating with partners on final commercial grade solution approval.
