In 2024, Sri Lanka’s Port of Colombo has shown impressive growth in container handling, highlighting a strong improvement in operational performance.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) reported a substantial increase of 16% year-on-year, processing 1,541,034 TEUs in 2024 so far. Additionally, South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), a major port operator at Port of Colombo, experienced growth, handling 1,281,642 TEUs this year, up 10.4% from the same period last year. Meanwhile, the Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) saw a slighter 5% increase reporting 2,200,956 TEUs.

Overall, Colombo Port has achieved a cumulative growth of 9.6%, reaching 5,023,632 TEUs in 2024, up from 4,584,843 TEUs in the same months in 2023. If this trend continues, 2024 is poised to surpass previous records, further cementing Colombo’s role as a crucial player in the region, according to SLPA’s announcement.
