Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean for seven 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels. The deal was finalized by Yang Ming Chairman Chuck Tsai and Hanwha Ocean CEO Charles Kim. Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2029.
Each vessel will have a capacity of 15,880 TEU and be the first in Taiwan to feature Ammonia Fuel Ready (AFR) Level 1C specifications, certified by ABS. The design allows future conversion to ammonia dual-fuel propulsion while meeting IMO environmental requirements.
The ships will also feature the world’s first Type-B LNG fuel tank with a 1.0 bar design pressure, developed jointly by Hanwha Ocean and ABS. The new tank improves safety and efficiency compared to conventional 0.7 bar tanks.
LNG dual-fuel technology can cut GHG emissions by around 20%. Yang Ming already has five 15,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels scheduled for delivery starting in 2026. Together, the 12 vessels will strengthen the company’s green fleet, operational flexibility, and global competitiveness.
Ammonia adoption positions Yang Ming for future decarbonization while lowering conversion costs. The company continues to phase out older ships and expand clean-energy solutions, reinforcing its sustainability and service excellence.
