The methanol dual-fuel VLCC New Explorer has been delivered in Dalian, China. The handover took place on December 22.

The vessel was built by Dalian Shipbuilding, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, for China Merchants Shipping. It is the world’s first methanol dual-fuel VLCC to enter commercial service. China Classification Society (CCS) classed the ship and supported its early delivery.

New Explorer is an eighth-generation VLCC developed by Dalian Shipbuilding. It measures about 333 meters in length and can carry around 2.1 million barrels of crude oil.

The ship features a shallower full-load draft than conventional VLCCs. This design improves passage through the Malacca Strait and increases port access. The vessel also offers strong seaworthiness, low emissions, and intelligent operations.

The tanker uses a domestically produced methanol dual-fuel main engine and fuel supply system. The setup can cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 92 percent. It also reduces sulfur oxides by 99 percent and particulate matter by 90 percent.

The vessel includes onboard intelligent systems. These cover liquid cargo control and engine room operation and maintenance. The systems improve efficiency, safety, and overall performance.

CCS said it was involved throughout the design, construction, and commissioning stages. The society provided technical support for green and intelligent ship solutions.
