World Fuel Services has supplied a waste-based biofuel to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ vessel Norwegian Viva in Piraeus, Greece. The operation, coordinated with Greek supplier EKO, marks one of the first commercial biofuel bunkerings for a cruise ship in Greece.

The delivery is part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Sail & Sustain program, which expands its use of sustainable fuels across Southern Europe. The company has previously conducted biofuel trials in Gibraltar, Copenhagen, the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region, and Piraeus in July 2025.

Kimberly Westmoreland, Senior Director Cruise and Energy Transition at World Fuel, said the collaboration demonstrates that cruise operators can access certified alternative fuels today, combining global supply with local execution.

Lory Urdaneta, Senior Director Energy Strategy at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, added that the operation helps scale lower-carbon solutions while maintaining guest experience. She said working with World Fuel and EKO accelerates decarbonization and extends sustainability across new regions.

Chrisanthopoulos Konstantinos, Manager at EKO, said the supply shows the readiness of the Greek market and the potential for wider biofuel adoption in the Mediterranean.

World Fuel highlighted that partnerships like this help the cruise industry make measurable progress on decarbonization by ensuring supply, certification, and operational reliability.
