Wincanton has announced the first wave of 24 new electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) joining its fleet this year, marking a key step towards its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Supplied by DAF Trucks, Volvo Trucks, and Renault Trucks, the fleet is capable of operating at over 40 tonnes and is expected to cut annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 2,400 tonnes.

To support this transition, Wincanton is installing dedicated charging infrastructure across strategic depot locations, including Greenford, Portbury, its Scotland Gateway Hub near Glasgow, and The WEB in Northamptonshire.

Developed in partnership with Voltempo and Gridserve, this infrastructure will enable seamless integration of electric vehicles across Wincanton’s growing green fleet.

The initiative forms part of Wincanton’s involvement in the Electric Freightway and eFREIGHT 2030 consortia, which are supported by the UK Government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme and managed by Innovate UK.

Through these projects, Wincanton aims to gather actionable insights to scale decarbonisation across its fleet.

Carl Hanson, Managing Director of Transport at Wincanton, said that while full adoption will take time, his company is acting today with proven technologies to drive efficiency and cut carbon, while he added that greener supply chains depend on collaboration and optimisation.

Wincanton’s sustainability strategy is further supported by its digital transport management platform, EyeQ, which enhances fleet efficiency and emissions reductions through data-driven insights.

The platform helps optimise routes, improve visibility, and can reduce carbon output by up to 10% for customers.

In 2021, Wincanton became the UK’s first premium home delivery provider to offer a carbon-neutral service.
