Wärtsilä renews power plant O&M contract in Mauritania

Wärtsilä has renewed its operation and maintenance agreement with Tasiast Mauritanie Limited S.A. for a further three years. The agreement supports reliable and safe operations at the Mauritanian gold mine, operated by a subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2025.

The renewed contract covers the mine’s 60 MW power plant, which Wärtsilä has operated and maintained since its commissioning in 2013. The plant plays a critical role in supporting production schedules at the remote site.

An outcome-based element, introduced in 2022 following a power plant extension, remains part of the agreement. It focuses on delivering measurable performance results aligned with the mine’s commercial and operational targets. The structure promotes shared responsibility between Wärtsilä and the customer.

The mine is located about 300 kilometres north of Nouakchott and is supplied by an isolated hybrid grid combining solar power, battery storage, and the Wärtsilä power plant. Wärtsilä’s engines provide both baseload power and spinning reserve to ensure grid stability.

Wärtsilä originally supplied the plant in 2013 and completed an expansion under an EPC contract in 2021. A further project is now underway to install two additional Wärtsilä engines.
