Technology group Wärtsilä will deliver 27 engines to supply continuous primary power for a new US data center under construction. The onsite power facility will feature 27 Wärtsilä 50SG flexible engines, generating 507 MW. The engines run on natural gas and can be converted to sustainable fuels in the future. Delivery is scheduled for 2027. The order was recorded in Wärtsilä’s Q4 2025 intake.
Data centers require large amounts of power with high uptime reliability. Grid access is often limited by capacity constraints and instability. Developers are increasingly turning to off-grid solutions, such as modular engine power plants, to secure reliable primary power.
Wärtsilä engines were selected for their ability to operate at full capacity even above 100°F (37.8°C). They also provide low emissions and high fuel efficiency, helping customers meet sustainability goals.
Anders Lindberg, President of Wärtsilä Energy, said: “Our off-grid solutions eliminate long grid delays. They scale efficiently as data centers grow and use less fuel and water than other technologies. Wärtsilä has a global footprint of 79 GW. In the US alone, it operates around 80 power plants totaling 6 GW. According to its Q3 2025 report, the US data center market offers major growth opportunities. Rising energy demand and the need for reliable, flexible power make engine-based and energy storage solutions increasingly attractive.
