Wärtsilä has successfully tested its Active Ignition Mitigation System (AIMS), designed to stop flammable gas build-up during thermal events in battery energy storage systems (BESS).
In July, the company ran three full-scale tests in the U.S., simulating worst-case thermal runaway scenarios in its Quantum2 containerised BESS enclosure. Witnessed by a major U.S. utility and third-party experts, the tests showed AIMS could prevent explosions and keep the enclosure structurally intact.
AIMS works by safely igniting flammable gases early using sparkers and door-mounted panels, avoiding dangerous pressure build-up.
“This is a first-of-its-kind test and a major milestone for energy storage safety,” said Tamara De Gruyter, President of Wärtsilä Energy Storage.
The results will inform Wärtsilä’s ongoing work on BESS safety and compliance with evolving global standards.
