Valenciaport recorded a slight dip in overall container traffic for May 2025 representing a year-over-year decrease of 1.38%.
Despite this modest decline, the port has moved 2,345,718 containers in the first five months of the year, showing a 4.6% rise compared to the same period last year,while it handled in total of 526,814 TEUs, 7,386 fewer than in May 2024.
The overall growth is driven by strong import and export activity, which increased by 4.72% and 17.89%, respectively, between January and May.
However, the momentum in transshipment activity appears to be weakening. Full transshipment containers declined by 0.95%, while empty transshipment TEUs dropped significantly by 17.31% in the same period. This softening trend continued through May.
According to the Port Authority’s Statistical Bulletin, Valenciaport is currently handling 5,580,230 containers on a year-over-year basis, marking an overall increase of 10.26%.
In terms of trade by country, Algeria emerged as a key growth market, with cargo tonnage up by 30.80% and container volumes surging by 60%. This sharp rise is largely attributed to the normalization of trade relations between Spain and Algeria.
As a result, Algeria has become Valenciaport’s fourth-largest trading partner by tonnage and third-largest by container traffic, totaling 134,729 TEUs over five months.
China and the United States continue to occupy the top two positions in Valenciaport’s global trade rankings.
Passenger traffic presented mixed results.
While regular ferry lines carried 56,654 passengers in May a 7.74% year-on-year increase cruise passenger traffic dropped by 6.67%, totaling 90,979 cruise travelers compared to the same month in 2024.
