Uyeno Transtech Ltd.’s hydrogen-fueled demonstration oil tanker, KIKOU MARU (IMO 1015595), has earned the highest “S” rating under the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program, jointly operated by Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and ClassNK. This marks the first use of the Program for a coastal vessel.

Evaluation and Financing
ClassNK assessed KIKOU MARU based on decarbonization, environmental performance, and innovation. DBJ provided financing to support Uyeno Transtech’s efforts to develop next-generation low- and zero-emission vessels.

Ship Features and Innovations
KIKOU MARU is a hydrogen fuel-ready electric propulsion oil tanker, built at Fukuoka Shipbuilding’s Nagasaki Yard and delivered in October 2025. Key features include:

  • Hull design and compartments optimized for future hydrogen fuel tank installation.

  • Fuel-efficient operation supported by lithium-ion batteries.

Planned Demonstration Voyage
In 2026, KIKOU MARU will conduct one of the world’s first hydrogen-fueled demonstration voyages, as part of the Nippon Foundation’s subsidized Zero Emission Ships project.

Program Significance
The “S” rating acknowledges exceptional decarbonization, environmental performance, and advanced operational capabilities. DBJ and ClassNK aim to expand the program to support more shipping and shipbuilding companies in transitioning to zero-emission operations.

Ship Details

  • Type: Oil tanker

  • Cargo capacity: Approx. 5,000 KL

  • Shipbuilder: Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Nagasaki Yard

KIKOU MARU exemplifies innovation in sustainable shipping and demonstrates the potential for hydrogen-powered vessels in commercial operations.
