Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure has reached the final stage of a landmark navigation modernization project, completing delivery of its SafePilot Portable Pilot Unit (PPU) and navigation software to be deployed across 25 major Mexican ports. Once fully implemented, the initiative will stand as one of the world’s largest standardized maritime navigation projects, positioning Mexico at the forefront of global port technology.
“This project goes beyond just upgrading equipment — it’s about setting a new standard for pilotage throughout Mexico,” said Tommy Mikkelsen, Managing Director of Trelleborg’s Navigation and Piloting division. “By standardizing navigation technology across all 25 ports, we’re creating a cohesive ecosystem that enhances safety, consistency, and efficiency on a national scale.”
The SafePilot units feature independent heading capability, dual-unit configurations for continuous operations, and a comprehensive training program led by Trelleborg experts with over 25 years of global experience.
According to Captain Mario Alejandro Camacho, Secretary General of the Sindicato Nacional de Pilotos de Puerto, the new system “will significantly enhance pilotage safety in Mexican ports, aligning with international best practices,” particularly as ports handle larger vessels and growing cargo volumes.
Upon completion, the standardized system will deliver major benefits, including improved safety, simplified training, reduced maintenance, and greater operational reliability — setting a global example of how coordinated modernization can transform national port operations.
