French energy giant TotalEnergies has submitted permitting documents for two offshore wind projects in Germany with a combined capacity of 3GW.
This is the first major step toward developing the sites awarded to the company in 2023 by the German Federal Network Agency.
The applications, filed with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, are for the NordseeEnergies 1 (NSE1) in the German North Sea and the OstseeEnergies project in the Baltic Sea.
The submission includes an environmental impact assessment, a protection and safety concept, as well as a preliminary layout of the wind farms, showing the placement of turbines and cables.
Under Germany’s Offshore Wind Energy Act, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has 18 months to review the material and issue a planning approval decision.
If all goes according to plan, construction on the two projects is scheduled to begin in 2029, with commissioning set for 2031. The 2GW NSE1 and 1GW OSE wind farms will be able to power more than three million households.
“Everyone is working with great focus on implementing the projects, because Germany is the most important European market for the development of our integrated power business,” said Antoine Becker, managing director of offshore wind at TotalEnergies in Germany.
